While dust in your home might seem like a minor nuisance for some, for others who have dust allergies, it can cause asthma, rashes, runny noses, coughs and more.
For those that are allergic to dust (like myself) and other airborne allergens, it’s not a minor nuisance…more of a major pain in the ass!
The daily regime of taking pills, inhalers and nasel sprays is a real grind…and then, on some days, none of it helps. At times it can be beyond depressing. Life sapping and soul destroying is more like it.
As I work from home, I decided to make the air that I breathe daily, the most pure, dust free air possible.
Which is how I came about making this free guide to the best anti dust air cleaner on the market to provide help to anyone trying to find out what to look for in a good air purifier that controls the mites.

Please read my full review of the Oransi Max to find out why I name it the best anti-dust air filter of 2018…
I chose this air cleaner as Oransi filters were proven to be some of the best in the industry by one of the largest independent peer review studies.
The Oransi max houses a cleanable pre-filter, three-stage filtration, and a dust sensor. Three essential ingredients to make the best air cleaner for dust.
This model comes with a three-stage filtration system.
A pre-filter captures the largest particles from the air. The main advantage of such filter is that it can be cleaned with a vacuum cleaner and doesn’t need to be replaced more often than every couple of years.
The next stage is a v-HEPA filter which like all HEPA filters is capable of capturing 99.97% of all airborne particles.
After that is the activated carbon filter which is great for filtering out odors and smoke.
The Pre-filters, v-HEPA, and activated carbon filters need to be replaced every 12 months.
The replacement v-HEPA filter will cost you around $50. You can find deals for the package (pre-filter + carbon filter+ v-HEPA) on Amazon for about $99.
The unit has a built-in negative ion emitter. The ionizer helps the filters collect the contaminated dust particles from the air. It also does a good job neutralizing the positive charges that come from TVs, computers, DVD players, and etc. The ionizer is optional and can be turned on and off depending on your preferences. This feature is ozone-free…an absolute necessity when choosing an air purifier with a built-in ionizer as their worth has been brought into question a number of times.
The model is equipped with a special dust sensor. It monitors the levels in your room and adjusts the fan speed accordingly. This particular feature is most likely the reason for the higher cost of this product. I believe that it’s worth the money since your lungs and nose can’t sense when the fan speed needs to be changed. The feature also saves you money on energy bills by preventing the fan from running at high speed at all times.
The design of this unit is rather simple which immediately appealed to me. It has only four buttons and a digital display.
The Oransi Max can be placed against the wall since the air intakes are on the sides and the clean air flows out from the top.
The only design disadvantage, which I found to be a common feature for many air cleaners on the market, is the bright LED light that indicates the unit settings. The light can’t be shut off and might interfere with your sleep since it looks especially bright in a dark bedroom.
Filter Replacement Indicator
The Max is equipped with a filter replacement indicator which tells you when you need to change your filters. This is a useful feature since people often forget to replace the filters and end up breathing contaminated air and being dissatisfied with their air cleaners.
This air filter is rather quiet. You won’t be able to hear it at the lowest fan setting even when it’s installed 5 feet away.
The other fan settings are a little louder however. If you are a light sleeper, you most likely won’t be able to sleep when the unit is working at the highest fan setting.
According to the reviews, this unit is one of the quietest models that I took a look at. When running on the first three fan speeds, it’s very quiet.
Special attention should be paid to the Oransi 10-year warranty.
The warranty works only if the air purifier is purchased in the U.S. and from an authorized seller.
The unit must be used in accordance with the manual. However, Oransi is not strict about getting the filters replaced right on time. The unit must be connected to the proper power supply. The warranty won’t work in the regions that use 220V.
After reading a good number of customer reviews, I found that Oransi is very good in upholding their 10-year warranty. They readily send replacement parts and sometimes change the whole unit.
- 3-stage filtration system
- Dust level sensor
- Built-in ionizer
- 10-year warranty
- Quiet operation
- Simple design
- Bright LED light that can’t be turned off
- Fairly high price
Oransi Max HEPA Air Purifier review conclusion
Overall, I’m very satisfied with the number of features this unit has and the positive reviews it gets. It will take up to 24 hours for the air filter to clean the air in a large room so the air quality indicator shows appropriate readings. This unit is powerful enough not to just clean the air but to reduce the visible layers of dust in your house. I would recommend this filter to people who have a bad mite problem in large rooms and are not afraid of the slightly higher cost.
By dusting your surfaces with a feather brush, all you are doing is sending the small particles flying around the room, increasing the chances of breathing them in. Eventually, the remaining particles that you didn’t inhale, will just settle back down on the same surfaces you just tried to remove them from.
Mopping the floor and using polish on surfaces is slightly more effective, but it doesn’t take long for more dust to take the place of the stuff you just removed.
A slightly better solution is to clean surfaces using an anti-dust mite spray. These can also be effective if you spray them on your bedsheets (a major habitat for mites) however, you will need to continue to spray once a week and a good spray costs a lot of money.
Even if you don’t see the dust with your eyes, it’s presence can be felt by your lungs. The small airborne particles, such as mites, pet dander, skin flakes, and dirt are always present in your home. Inhaling them can cause allergies, asthma and other respiratory problems along with rashes and itchy eyes.
Most homes have a variety of excellent dust collectors – such as carpets, soft toys, and curtains to name just a few. It also likes to settle on electronic devices, such as TVs, computers, DVD players, and printers. Keeping all of them clean with dusters, vacuum cleaners, and mops is a thankless task that needs to be performed daily,to truly have a chance of creating a near spotless home.
If you want to make sure that the air in your home is as dust-free as possible, your best bet is to purchase an air purifier specifically designed for dust-control. This device can work 24 hours a day to filter out the harmful particles and allow you to breathe clean air.
As a side benefit, it will also keep your dusting job to a minimum.
What I like to do, is crank my air cleaner on high, whilst I vaccum and mop the room, wearing one of these that you can buy on Amazon.
That way, I know that any particles that escape my cloth and whipped up into the air, will be caught by the purifier.
Not all machines are created equal, that’s why I spent some time browsing through the latest models to find the best air purifier for people with a dust mite allergy.
I’ve compiled the follow list of air filters that are most suitable for keeping the air in your home as clean as possible.
After careful consideration, we decided on the Oransi Max as our top dust air filter…but lets look at the other great contenders that came close
Blue Air 505
Yes, it’s the Blueair 505 purifier again! Getting yet another runner up position in our awards…this really is a superb air cleaner.
With 4 Different filters – this unit is capable of cleaning the air in very large spaces.
It touts hospital grade specs, but unfortunately that all comes at a price. If you have large rooms however, you really have to take a look at this one
AeraMax 300 Air Purifier
And another fabulous air filter getting yet another runner up award. The Aeramax is designed with allergy sufferers in mind, so it’s no surprise it does a spectacular job at destroying fine particles!
Having won awards in the Asthma and Allergy arena and featuring 4 stage purification (like the blueair above) this unit is a serious contender.
If you want to know more about these great Air cleaners, you can check out our full reviews of them on our page about large room purification.
I chose this purifier based on its various useful features and positive customer feedback. The HEPA-pure filter is specifically designed to fight micro particles and has very good room coverage for the price.
Lifetime limited warranty and a sleek design make this unit a great model to look into. The T500 model features a washable carbon pre-filter, a built-in ionizer, and three fan settings, however, it doesn’t participate in the CADR program.
Sleek Tower Design
While I’m not a big fan of special designs, this unit might appeal to people due to its sleek build. The tower shape makes this model a great choice for any room since it takes up very little space.
The Alen T500 Tower is rather light (9 lbs.) which makes it very portable. It’s also equipped with a handle so you’ll have no trouble carrying it from one room to another.
The air intake is at the back and the clean air flows out from the front of the unit, which means you will have to place it a little away from a wall.
The T500 is available in a range of great color choices.
Unlike many modern air purifiers available on the market today, this one is not equipped with any smart sensors to identify the level of the air pollution. There are 3 fan settings. You have to choose the fan setting yourself depending on the amount of dust that needs to be destroyed. However, the ionizer can also be turned off and on manually.
What I really liked about the filtration system of this unit was the washable pre-filter.
Usually, pre-filters need to be replaced once in about 3 to 6 months, which can get rather costly. Here you can save money on the replacement pre-filters which adds value to an already pretty affordable air purifier.
The T500 comes with an HEPA-pure filter which is it’s main asset designed to deal with micro particles. However, you can purchase other filters, such as HEPA-fresh (fights allergens and odors), HEPA-OdorCell (fights odors and smoke) or HEPA-Silver (fights mold and bacteria) depending on your individual needs.
HEPA filters need to be replaced once in about 6 – 12 months, depending on the use. The prices for them vary from $44 (HEPA-Pure) to $89 (HEPA-OdorCell).
Alen is famous for offering a lifetime warranty for its products.
I took a closer look at the conditions that need to be satisfied for the warranty to work. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that there are not hidden clauses.
All you need to do is operate the unit in accordance with the manual and keep the filters changed on time, however you can’t transfer ownership or take the unit out of the U.S.
If you purchase the purifier outside the U.S., you need to contact the company for warranty conditions. While I didn’t test the warranty myself, I browsed through various customer reviews to find out that it really works. The manufacturer is ready to ship replacement parts, even though they are not always new.
The manufacturer claims that this unit is very quiet. After reading through various reviews, I can say that this is true only for the lowest fan speed.
The 2nd fan speed is more or less quiet, however it sounds from customer reviews that this setting is more eqivalent to the sound of rainfall.
The 3rd fan speed is loud enough to interfere with your sleep even if you are not a light sleeper. Accordingly, this model can only be used at 1st and 2nd fan speeds in your bedroom.
Meanwhile, there is no annoying “always on” blue lights which often comes with air cleaners and can be a problem for people who like to sleep in complete darkness. The light goes off several seconds after you press any buttons on the control panel.
This Alen model has an Energy Star rating. However, it just narrowly makes it. Accordingly, it’s hard to say that the unit is completely energy efficient.
When working at its highest speed it burns about 53 watts. After doing some brief calculations, I can’t say that this air filter should take a serious toll on your energy bills even if you use it around the clock.
The manufacturer claims that this particular model can service a room up to 500 square feet. However, it can only clean such a large area when working at the highest fan speed.
If you are planning to use it in a large room, you must be ready to deal with the loud noise. The unit can clean up to 300 square feet at the second fan speed and only 150 square feet at the lowest fan setting.
- Washable pre-filter
- Lifetime warranty
- Sleek design
- Large coverage area
- Loud noise at the highest fan speed
- Not tested by AHAM
Alen T500 Tower Air Purifier review conclusion
Overall, I can say that I’m satisfied with the number of options this air cleaner is offering its users for a very respectable price.
You can probably find a more cheap basement air purifier around, but in terms of quality, if you do your research and compare different models, you will find that the Alen T500 offers the best value for money.
In order to get the best results, you have to use it with all the doors and windows closed. You should feel the difference after about a couple of hours of use even in the stuffiest rooms. I would recommend this unit for people who are looking for an air purifier to deal with the dust problem. However, special attention should be paid to the area of the room and the fan settings required to clean in.
Best air purifier for dust under $100
I must make an honoury mention of the Levoit LV-H132 air purifier for it’s capabilities of dealing with small particles for a reasonable price. This does come with a caveat however. Cleaning dust effectively is usually a whole room deal. You can’t just sit in front of an air purifier with it blowing on you, when you have and allergic problem. You need the purifier to be able to handle the entire room. With that in mind, the Levoit can only really handle small rooms. That being said, if your room is small – you won’t find a better option out there.
